Covered to Move: 6 Common Fitness Insurance Benefits

  |  by

While fitness insurance benefits vary, they’re being designed more now to meet healthcare needs. Read these 6 perks built to support your health & get you moving.

More employers are recognizing that a healthy workforce is a productive one—and that’s where fitness-related insurance benefits come in. These perks, often included as part of employer-sponsored health plans or wellness programs, encourage physical activity and support overall well-being. Here are the most common fitness benefits offered through insurance plans today:

1. Gym Membership Reimbursements

One of the most popular fitness perks, gym membership reimbursements help offset the cost of monthly dues at fitness centers, studios or even online platforms. Plans may reimburse a flat amount (e.g., $150/year) or cover a percentage of your gym fees after proof of regular attendance.

Example: UnitedHealthcare and Aetna have offered reimbursement or discounts on memberships if members meet minimum visit requirements.

2. Fitness Tracking Incentives

Many insurance plans reward members for tracking physical activity through fitness apps or wearable devices. Meeting step goals or logging workouts can earn you points toward gift cards, premium discounts or health savings account (HSA) contributions.

Example: Programs like Vitality and Blue365 (from Blue Cross Blue Shield) have integrated with fitness trackers to reward consistent activity.

3. Virtual Fitness Classes and Subscriptions

With the rise of remote work and home workouts, insurers are increasingly covering or subsidizing virtual fitness classes. This includes access to yoga, HIIT, strength training or meditation platforms like Peloton, Fitbit Premium or ClassPass.

Example: Cigna and Humana have offered digital fitness options either directly or through partnerships.

4. Discounts on Fitness Equipment

Some plans offer discounts on at-home fitness gear, including resistance bands, weights, yoga mats, or even larger equipment like treadmills or stationary bikes. These benefits are sometimes included in wellness incentive programs or tied to specific spending accounts.

Example: Blue365 (for Blue Cross Blue Shield members) has offered ongoing discounts of up to 40% on home fitness gear, including treadmills, ellipticals and rowing machines through partners like ProForm and Reebok.

5. Personal Trainer or Coaching Support

Although less common, some insurance wellness programs offer access to health or fitness coaches. These professionals provide personalized fitness plans, accountability and motivation. Some employers may subsidize a limited number of personal training sessions per year.

Example: Humana’s Go365 wellness program gives members access to personalized health and fitness coaching. Based on health assessments, members may be referred to fitness coaches for goal setting, accountability and support.

6. Weight Management and Physical Activity Programs

Many insurers support weight loss and fitness through evidence-based programs like WW (formerly Weight Watchers), SilverSneakers (for seniors), and other structured lifestyle coaching programs that include exercise guidance.

Example: SilverSneakers, available through many Medicare Advantage plans (like those from Anthem, Humana, and others), have offered free memberships to thousands of gyms and access to group fitness classes both in-person and online.

Fitness insurance benefits vary by provider, employer and plan type, but more than ever, they’re being designed to meet employees where they are. Whether it’s a gym reimbursement, wearable tracking rewards or virtual class access, these perks are built to support your health and get you moving.

Tip: Check your health plan’s wellness portal or speak with HR to find out what’s available—you might be surprised by what’s already covered.
