The FDA instituted a revised Nutrition Facts Label for packaged foods to go into effect as early as January 1, 2020 (or by 2021 for manufacturers with <$10 million in annual food sales), though many food manufacturers have already rolled this out.
They have revised nutritional content in light of more research on the link between diet and chronic diseases. Such changes include renewed serving sizes, larger view of calorie content, updated daily values (DVs), “added” sugars and actual amounts of recommended nutrients. It is important to note, however, that some of the changes are based on current trends, not necessarily dietary advice. For instance, serving sizes will now reflect the amount of foods/beverages that people are actually consuming, not what they should be consuming for continued dietary health.
